The laptop is a magnificent engineering compromise that sells one posture defect with every unit: the screen and keyboard occupy the same plane, so either the neck bends to reach the screen or the wrists bend to reach the keyboard. Use a laptop flat on a desk for years and the neck's side of the bargain — 2–5 kg of head held at 30–45° — becomes the most common postural complaint in knowledge work.
The geometry, priced in centimeters
Screen fitted for the neck wants its top edge at eye level — roughly 25–35 cm above desk surface for a seated adult. A laptop's screen top sits at ~15–20 cm. The deficit forces the forward-head posture every commute and café documents. Meanwhile the keyboard, raised to eye-height-winner position, extends the wrists the other way. One plane, two wrongs — the compromise is unavoidable, which is why the fix is separation.
The fix chain, cheapest first
- $0 — restructure where you already sit: laptop on a stack of books/boxes to screen-top-at-eye-level, USB or Bluetooth keyboard (borrowed, office surplus) on the desk. Works today.
- ~$40 — the standard kit: laptop riser or stand + external keyboard + mouse. The most cost-effective ergonomics purchase in existence; the monitor calculator sizes the riser.
- ~$120 — add a monitor arm + real monitor for full-time use, laptop becomes the second screen. The endgame for 8-hour days.
The verification test
Fitted correctly, an hour of work produces: neutral gaze (screen top at/below eye level), wrists straight (keyboard at elbow height — the desk calculator), and — the honest test — video-call fatigue without neck awareness. If your neck still "notices itself" by hour two, the screen is still too low or too far; measure the eye line again rather than re-posturing harder.
The travel reality
Hotel desks and cafés will defeat you — accept it and manage the dose: 20-minute posture resets, phone at eye level for long reads, and the two-minute stretch sequence (chin tucks, shoulder rolls, doorway chest stretch) after long laptop sessions. The geometry problem is unsolvable on the road; it is only unamortizable at home. Fix home first.
